Ripples of Connection: The Cat Is the Answer

Export Case   Ripples of Connection: The Cat Is the Answer     2026.09     Where the Connection Began   Nabiclub returned to the 〈K-Book Copyright Market〉 this year. Overseas publishing markets diverge from domestic ones, and it is precisely within those differences that new possibilities emerge. This discovery is the fundamental reason we participate. What works differs from country to country, press to press, buyer to buyer. That is only natural, since the vitality of publishing comes from diversity. The primary purpose of attending is to identify and cultivate those points of intersection, whether through a market, a theme, a publishing house, or an individual editor.   When Nabiclub first attended the Market in 2025 to establish its identity as a press specializing in Korean mystery fiction, we achieved a modest yet deeply meaningful milestone: securing a rights contract with Yilin, a ...

A Thriving Metamorphosis of Queer Literature

Knowledge   A Thriving Metamorphosis of Queer Literature The growth and prospects of Korean queer literature   2025.09.04   Refreshing history: joining hands with feminism   The queerness of Korean literature continues to reach new heights. Recent works published in literary magazines, almost without exception, embody a feminist consciousness and a queer-friendly stance. Novels that feature gay, lesbian, and transgender characters as central figures are also steadily on the rise. Of course, whether a work can be called “queer literature” simply because its characters are named and categorized as queer remains a question that requires ongoing reflection. Over the past ten years, however, the demographic composition of the literary world created by Korean literature has gradually shifted from cisgender heterosexuals to characters where queerness, disability, and feminism intersect. Given that the visibility of queer identities begins wit...

Your Good Sense of Backing in Good Books

Knowledge   Your Good Sense of Backing in Good Books Based on the example of online bookstore Aladin   2025.06.02   Why “Book Fund”?   Online bookstore Aladin’s Book Fund program was first launched in 2012. The initial program allowed accounts to back up to 50,000 won to fund publishing projects. Publishers benefited by being able to raise money for pre-publication production costs, customers benefited by being able to earn up to 130% of their support back as bookstore credit if the book they funded became an overall bestseller, and booksellers benefited by being able to build an early audience of avid readers willing to support in upcoming titles. However, this design could not have a direct influence on the success of the book after publication, as it did not directly link the Book Fund to actual purchases of the book.In 2022, the web novel Return of the Blossoming Blade (Luff Media) was widely publicized in the media for its book f...

How New Writers Are Discovered in Korea: Shinchunmunye, Literary Awards, and Newly Emerging Pathways

Topic   How New Writers Are Discovered in Korea:Shinchunmunye, Literary Awards, and Newly Emerging Pathways   2025.03.10   At the award ceremony of shinchunmunye (annual spring literary contest), one of Korea’s representative systems for recognizing new writers, there is always a “congratulatory speech” delivered by the judges (mostly novelists, sometimes literary critics) to the winners. As a former literary reporter for a newspaper and then head of the Department of Culture, I have observed that every year, no matter who the judges are, there is always a certain message to the winners. Although you never can tell the future, I’m sure the same will also be true for next year’s shinchunmunye. The specific words vary by judge, but if I were to make it up, it would go something like this (which, of course, doesn’t even come close to the beautiful and moving words of the judges).   “Congratulations, you are now a writer. You mu...

Books That Expanded My Horizons

One-Liner Quotes   Books That Expanded My Horizons Korean-French Translator’s Pick: Korean Books   2024.09.02   As a French translator, Somi Chang has been translating modern and contemporary French literature into Korean, including Margrit Duras, Albert Camus, Fran?oise Sagan, Romain Garrigue, Michel Uelbeck, Herv? Guibert, and Val?rie Ferenc.   From the position of being an introducer of foreign books to Korean readers, I have gone the other way, introducing books by Korean authors to international readers. I browsed through my bookshelves. Adding the keyword “Korea” to my personal book selection criteria of “books that expand my horizons,” regardless of language, I picked out two books with great effort. Two books are: Leaning Against the Entasis Solumns at Muryangsujeon Hall (Hakgojae Publishers, 1994) and Music Story Collection (Franz, 2024).     Leaning Against the Entasis Solumns at Murya...

Leipziger Buchmesse is the earliest international book fair held every year. Leipzig, the background of Martin Luther’s debates on reformation, has been a center of book printing, publishing, and design since medieval times, as well as being home to numerous publishing houses. The competition is set in this historical context. In Korea, the Korean Publishers Association has been holding a contest for Korean books, and the selected books have been submitted to the contest in Germany. Consequently, Uhm Yoo-Jung’s collection, FEUILLES (Leaves), published by Media Bus in 2021, won the prize for the first time in Korea, followed by Workroom Press’s Samu...

The Mood We Want for Tomorrow

New Books   The Mood We Want for Tomorrow     2026.09     Kang Bora, Kwon Seok, et al., Even Wanting It to Be Fun Is Asking Too Much, Munhakdongne, 2026.   Even Wanting It to Be Fun Is Asking Too Much is a short story anthology published by Munhakdongne since 2023. The anthology's theme is “labor.” Its editor is novelist Jang Kang-myoung, a writer who moves between reality and literature to capture a self-portrait of Korean society, sometimes sharply and sometimes with humor. In planning the labor fiction series, he set the rule that, driven by the belief that “more works capturing today's labor scene need to be written,” the stories should record the “here and now” rather than decades past or a distant future, and should be written realistically, through legwork.   Jang Kang-myoung, together with writers who shared this vision, formed a literary collective cal...
