Books that Critics from Each Generation Would Want to Translate Themselves

Special Project   Books that Critics from Each Generation Would Want to Translate Themselves     2026.09     If you have ever loved a book that remains unpublished abroad, you have likely wondered why such a remarkable work was never translated. In keeping with this issue's focus on the art of translation, 〈Special Project〉 asks critics which book they would personally choose to translate if given the chance. Critics from each generation offered recommendations through their own lens, choosing books that introduce Korea or lay bare the realities of our society.         The 20s Perspective – Lee Sollim, Cultural Critic   A Camera That Makes You Look Especially UglyShin I-in, Wisdom House, 2026   Can the small, odd details of one person's life survive a border crossing? A Camera That Makes You Look Especially Ugly is the poet Sh...

Ripples of Connection: The Cat Is the Answer

Export Case   Ripples of Connection: The Cat Is the Answer     2026.09     Where the Connection Began   Nabiclub returned to the 〈K-Book Copyright Market〉 this year. Overseas publishing markets diverge from domestic ones, and it is precisely within those differences that new possibilities emerge. This discovery is the fundamental reason we participate. What works differs from country to country, press to press, buyer to buyer. That is only natural, since the vitality of publishing comes from diversity. The primary purpose of attending is to identify and cultivate those points of intersection, whether through a market, a theme, a publishing house, or an individual editor.   When Nabiclub first attended the Market in 2025 to establish its identity as a press specializing in Korean mystery fiction, we achieved a modest yet deeply meaningful milestone: securing a rights contract with Yilin, a ...

The Evolution and Growing Pains of the Seoul International Book Fair

Knowledge   The Evolution and Growing Pains of the Seoul International Book Fair     2026.07     We live in an era where depressing indicators of an ongoing publishing recession and a declining reading population have become all too familiar. Paradoxically, however, the scene at the Seoul International Book Fair (SIBF) held every June, where people gather through books, is more vibrant and dynamic than ever. Even in the midsummer heat, the long lines of readers and the lively energy within the publishers’ booths never cease. It demonstrates that the inherent power of books as a medium remains entirely valid.   The success of the SIBF in recent years has been nothing short of peerless. Since 2023, the book fair has gradually shed its traditional character as a mere market for...

Expanding the World of Books Through Book-Themed Merchandise

Topic   Expanding the World of Books Through Book-Themed Merchandise   2025.12.01   The craze for book-themed merchandise   At bookstores and book fairs across the country, what catches the eye as much as the books themselves these days is book-themed merchandise. From bookmarks, postcards, and stickers to keyrings, T-shirts, book covers, incense, and drip-bag coffee, objects orbiting around books have now become a form of publishing content in their own right. According to Kyobo Book Centre’s statistics, sales of reading accessories in 2024 rose by 28% compared to the previous year. The trend was evident at this year’s Seoul International Book Fair (SIBF), where nearly every publisher’s booth displayed merchandise beside their books, and readers purchased these items with enthusiasm equal to the books themselves. Some criticize this shift, arguing that merchandise is overshadowing books and accelerating the commercialization of publishing. However, the ph...

The Secret Weapon: How Data Connects Global Publishing

Export Case   The Secret Weapon: How Data Connects Global Publishing   2025.12.01   LEE’s Literary Agency, founded in 2008 in Taiwan, is a rights agency specializing in cross-border licensing across Asia and beyond. It represents both Asian and international publishers, focusing on building data-driven connections between markets through translation rights and global collaboration. From the very beginning, LEE’s Literary Agency aimed not merely to bring foreign copyrights into Taiwan, but to help publishers across markets recognize and engage with one another. Our very first project was representing an American author and closing 17 deals within 1 year ? including one with a major US publisher. At the time, I had no idea that this experience would one day allow me to witness the shifting map of the Asian publishing landscape.   Insights into the global publishing market   Through countless cross-border collaborations and negotiations over the past yea...

Jane Lawson, Publishing Director at Doubleday, Talks About Korean Literature

Export Case   Jane Lawson, Publishing Director at Doubleday,Talks About Korean Literature   2025.11.03   Just a decade ago, there was a prevailing belief that Korean literature could not be globalized because of linguistic and translational barriers. However, with the improvement of translation and global readers’ growing eagerness for a wider range of stories, Korean content began to draw closer to them. It eventually settled in as its own genre under the name “K-content,” now recognized worldwide. Korean literature, in particular, proved this trend with Han Kang’s Nobel Prize in Literature. Yet, many Korean works remain undiscovered internationally. At the “2025 Copyright Export Support Program,” organized by the Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI) this past September, we met Jane Lawson, publishing director at Doubleday, an imprint of Penguin Random House UK, and discussed Korean literature.   ...

The Export Case of Hello Baby

Export Case   The Export Case of Hello Baby Women’s stories have strong appeal in the global literary market   2025.10.02   Published in March 2023, Hello Baby (EunHaengNaMu Publishing) by Kim Eui-Kyung is a novel that tells the stories of women struggling with infertility, an issue that has long been overlooked in our society. In recent years, infertility has become more common, and I even had acquaintances seeking treatment at clinics, but my knowledge was limited to the fact that the procedures placed a heavy burden on women’s bodies. For me, reading Hello Baby was a shockingly fresh experience, as the novel vividly and realistically depicts the treatment process and the psychology of women who choose to undergo it, making it feel almost like reportage. At the time, there was a steady demand overseas for women’s stories, and since attention was being paid not only to infertility treatments, but also to the social and cultural pressures impos...

Spreading Its Wings To the World: The Seoul Letter Shop

Export Case   Spreading Its Wings To the World: The Seoul Letter Shop   2025.01.06   On October 12, 2023, I received an email from Shinwon Agency, Korea’s first copyright export agency. They wanted to meet me at the Frankfurt Book Fair. I was going to be there, so we agreed to meet on October 19. This was about a month after I had sent them a cold email looking for an export partner. Within that month, I sent them a cover letter for my publishing house, met with them to introduce my publication lineup, and passed on additional materials about the works they were interested in. Among them was a proposal for The Seoul Letter Shop (TXTY), including a synopsis. It felt interesting and fateful that two Korean companies would be meeting in Frankfurt on October 19, 2023, to talk about working together. Shinwon said that there was a lot of interest from Anglo-American partner agencies and offered an exclusive agreement for The Seoul Letter Shop. I was flabbe...

Poetry Collections: The Trend of the Era and the Compass of the Heart

Topic   Poetry Collections: The Trend of the Era andthe Compass of the Heart   2024.12.02   The rise of Korean poetry and its global takeoff   There have been a number of “unusual” scenes in Korean literature in recent years. If I told you that Korean poetry is at the center of it, would international readers believe me? The proportion of readers in their 20s and 30s buying poetry books is increasing. The share of teenagers is also increasing, not to mention the number of poetry books being published. It is no longer strange or unfamiliar to see people transcribing poems. There are even bookstores in Korea that sell only poetry books. It’s a curious thing. Haven’t we all moved on to YouTube, TikTok, and Netflix? The thing that’s being “unlocked” should be smartphones, not poetry books, isn’t it?The year 2024 is poised to be a monumental year in Korean literary history. It is 100 years since the publication of Chu Yo-Han’ first poetry collection Beau...
