On the 100th Anniversary of Children’s Day, How Did the Korean Publishing Industry Spend the Day?

Topic On the 100th Anniversary of Children’s Day,How Did the Korean Publishing Industry Spend the Day? 2022.06.07 Many say, “The greater discovery than finding a new continent or inventing electricity is coining the concept, children.” Before the concept was recognized, children were merely toys for their parents or tools to use as a means. The discovery of the concept of children is the biggest for Chosun as it did not know the existence of young people. - Bang Jeong-Hwan, A historical study of the Joseon juvenile movement, The Chosun Ilbo, 1929/1/4. The year 2022 is the 100th anniversary of Children’s Day in Korea. The Children’s Day Declaration, announced by Bang Jeong-Hwan in 1922, is recognized as the world’s first children’s human rights declaration announced even before the Geneva Declaration of the Rights of the Child (the Geneva Declaration) in 1924, which was adopted by the League of Nation...

12 Years of Publishing Korean Books in Vietnam

Export Case 12 Years of Publishing Korean Books in Vietnam 2022.06.07 Nha Nam is one of the leading literary book publishing companies in Vietnam, and one of our main goals is to introduce the world's literary works to Vietnamese readers. Since our founding in 2005, Nha Nam has purchased the rights to many works from the UK, France, USA, Germany, Canada, China, and Japan and accomplished certain achievements. However, at the time, although we were keen to publish Korean books, we had quite a few difficulties finding books and contacting Korean copyright owners. Moreover, we did not have much information about Korean literature, nor did we have editors who could read and translate Korean. We could only refer to information through other languages such as English, French or Chinese. At that time, although not many Korean literary books were published, Korean dramas were widely known in Vietnam, so we decided to experiment with the book that had b...

Korea’s Publishing Trend - The World Literature Complete Collection

Topic Korea’s Publishing Trend- The World Literature Complete Collection 2022.05.02 At the end of a recently finished drama, “Our Beloved Summer,” a book titled I Like Early Summer written by Lee Na-Eun, was shown. The book does not exist in reality since it was a prop. The name Lee Na-Eun was the name of the drama's screenwriter. The book continuously shows itself as one of the key items connecting the main characters. It revealed itself in the last episode as a gift to viewers. Many viewers would have noticed that the book is similar to Minumsa Publishing Company's World Literature Series. The upper half is filled with a drawing, and the lower half is covered with a white background and a single-colored title. The cover's structure is a symbol of Minumsa's collection. The fact that people recognized the book by its cover shows how much Koreans are familiar with the collection. In the drama, “Our Beloved Summer,” a book th...

Secondhand Bookstore Manager’s Pick

One-Liner Quotes Secondhand Bookstore Manager’s Pick 2022.05.02 Before I began to work at a secondhand bookstore, I used to visit Japan and have chats with people working at used bookstores. They were mostly on the books, but sometimes we moved on to talking about the language itself. If you think of a secondhand bookstore in Tokyo, the first regions that come to mind would be Jinbocho or Kanda. But after discovering that there are unique used bookstores around the central subway line, I traveled to the suburbs of Tokyo. Then, one day, a worker at a secondhand bookstore near the central subway asked me to recommend him a Korean book. The bookstore he was at was a popular spot for foreign students studying at nearby universities, most of whom are from different countries and are great fans of Korean dramas. So, taking this as a chance, he created a group with some like-minded customers to study the Korean language and wanted me to recommend a...

K-BOOK Import Case in Germany

Export Case K-BOOK Import Case in Germany The start of a new story 2022.04.04 In 2017, when a colleague at our publishing house came across the title The Things You Can Only See When You Slow Down (Suo Books) by Haemin Sunim and suggested we buy the German rights, no one thought that this would be the beginning of a new era. Of course, we assumed that the book would sell well ? why else would we want to publish it? Nevertheless, we were surprised how quickly the first edition sold out. In the meantime, over 40,000 copies have crossed the counter and the 7th edition has just been printed. One reason for the great success in Germany was certainly Haemin Sunim's reading tour, which we organised in 2018, as well as his activity on social media, where he has millions of followers. Another is that Korean culture has become increasingly visible in Europe in recent years and interest in Korean literature has also grown in this country. ...

Best Sellers 2nd Week, April 2022 Bestseller Trends in the Four Biggest Online Bookstores in Korea 2022.05.02 The entire world, not just Korea, has been eyeing a particular work throughout April. It is “Pachinko,” a drama produced by Apple TV+ in the US. Taking a painful moment in history as background, it tells the story of Koreans who immigrated to Japan. The drama is based on an original novel with the same title written by Lee Min-Jin, a Korean living in the US, whose work has become a bestseller chosen by New York Times in 2017. The growing popularity of this weekly drama has made the Pachinko series rank 1st and 2nd in all four major online bookstores in Korea. Beginning with the sentence, “The history has ruined us all, but it doesn’t matter,” Pachinko narrates the lives of Koreans who immigrated to Japan, who could not blend with the locals and belonged nowhere.
